Clinical Outcome of Intra-articular Injection of PRP in ACL Injury.
Sponsor: Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka, Bangladesh
Summary
Brief Summary This study will evaluate whether an injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) improves pain and knee function in adults with MRI-confirmed partial tears of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), compared with conventional conservative treatment alone. The ACL is a ligament inside the knee that helps maintain joint stability. A partial tear can cause pain, swelling, a feeling of instability, and difficulty performing daily activities or participating in sports. PRP is prepared from the patient's own blood and contains a high concentration of platelets that release growth factors and other substances that may support tissue healing. This study will use an open-label, randomized, parallel-group design. A total of 52 eligible participants are planned to be assigned randomly to one of two groups, with 26 participants in each group. The experimental group will receive one ultrasound-guided injection of autologous PRP into the knee joint, in addition to conventional conservative treatment. The control group will receive conventional conservative treatment alone. Conservative treatment will include a structured exercise programme, functional knee bracing, and lifestyle and activity modification. Participants will be assessed before treatment and followed up at 3, 8, and 16 weeks. Pain will be measured using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Knee symptoms, daily activities, sport and recreation function, and knee-related quality of life will be assessed using the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS). Clinical knee stability will also be assessed using the Lachman test and anterior drawer test. The main purpose of this study is to determine whether adding a single ultrasound-guided PRP injection to conventional conservative treatment provides additional benefits in reducing pain and improving knee function compared with conservative treatment alone in adults with partial ACL tears.
