Effect of a Brief Mindfulness-Based Training on First Clinical Day Stress in First-Year Nursing Students

Sponsor: Suleyman Demirel University

View on ClinicalTrials.gov

Summary

This randomized controlled trial examines the effect of a brief hybrid mindfulness-based training on perceived stress and mindful attention awareness during the first clinical day of first-year nursing students. The training consists of four sessions (two face-to-face and two synchronous online) delivered over the two weeks before the first clinical day. Perceived stress is measured with the Perceived Stress Scale for Nursing Students on the day before the first clinical day and at the end of that day; mindful attention awareness is measured with the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale before the training and at the end of the first clinical day.

Brief Mindfulness-Based Training

A brief hybrid mindfulness-based training program based on the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) framework and adapted to the stressors that first-year nursing students anticipate before their first clinical day. Students in the experimental group received four sessions over the two weeks before their first clinical day: two face-to-face sessions (90 minutes each) and two synchronous online sessions (60 minutes each). Sessions included mindful breathing, body scan, the STOP technique, mindful movement, self-compassion meditation, the 3-Minute Breathing Space, and role-play of first-day clinical situations, with 10-15 minutes of daily home practice. Both groups completed the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) about two weeks before the first clinical day, before the training began, and the Perceived Stress Scale for Nursing Students (PSS-NS) on the day before the first clinical day. Both scales were completed again at the end of the first clinical day.
