Comparison of Bracing and Eccentric Loading Exercises on Pain Modulation and Functional Improvement in Acute Pes Anserine Bursitis Patients
Sponsor: Dr Aneeqa Sultan
Summary
This study aims to compare the effects of knee bracing and eccentric loading exercises on pain and functional ability in adults with acute pes anserine bursitis. Pes anserine bursitis is a condition affecting the inner side of the knee that can cause pain and difficulty with activities such as walking, climbing stairs, and standing up from a chair. A total of 32 participants will be included in the study and divided into two groups. One group will receive a knee-bracing intervention, while the other group will participate in a structured exercise program involving eccentric loading and strengthening exercises for the muscles around the knee. The bracing group will be instructed to wear a properly fitted medial-support knee brace for approximately 6-8 hours daily during weight-bearing activities. The exercise group will perform prescribed exercises three times per week for eight weeks, with exercise intensity adjusted according to individual tolerance. Pain intensity and knee-related functional ability will be assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). Assessments will be conducted before treatment and at the planned follow-up visits to evaluate changes in symptoms and function. The findings are intended to help determine which intervention provides greater improvement in pain and functional ability in people with acute pes anserine bursitis and may help guide physiotherapy treatment decisions.

Interventions
Medial-Support Knee Brace
Participants will use a medial-support knee brace daily for 6-8 hours during mobility for 8 weeks. The intervention will be used in patients with acute pes anserine bursitis to assess its effects on pain modulation and functional improvement.
Eccentric Loading Exercise
Participants will perform a structured exercise program targeting the quadriceps and hamstring muscles for 8 weeks. Supervised sessions will be conducted three times per week, with 3 sets of 10-15 repetitions. Exercise intensity will progress according to participant tolerance.
