Nerve Block Resolution Time Display and Pain Complaints
Sponsor: Medical University of South Carolina
Summary
This randomized prospective study will evaluate whether displaying the expected nerve block resolution time on a patient's splint reduces postoperative pain-related complaints after orthopedic surgery. Adults with a fracture who undergo surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina and receive a preoperative nerve block may be eligible. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive standard verbal communication alone or standard verbal communication plus a written display of the expected nerve block resolution time on the splint. The study will compare the number of postoperative pain-related phone calls between the two groups.

Physical display
Minimal intervention of a written physical display of anticipated nerve block resolution time on the patient's splint. This intervention will be supplemental to the standard communication regarding expected nerve block duration and postoperative pain management strategies. The intervention will not change any other aspect of clinical care.
