Holistic Approaches for Organizational Well-being of Healthcare Professionals
Sponsor: University of Rome Tor Vergata
Summary
The goal of this randomized clinical trial is to find out whether Caring Massage®, a Serenity room, or a combination of the two can improve organizational well-being among healthcare professionals. The main question it aims to answer is: Do healthcare professionals who receive one of these interventions report greater organizational well-being after 15 days than those who continue their usual post-shift routine? Researchers will compare each of the three intervention groups with a control group that receives no additional intervention. They will also assess whether any changes are maintained at the end of the intervention and 30 days later. Participants will: Be assigned to Caring Massage®, the Serenity room, an alternating combination of both, or the control group. If assigned to an intervention group, attend two sessions per week for one month. Complete questionnaires before the intervention, after 15 and 30 days, and 30 days after the intervention ends.

Interventions
Caring Massage
Caring Massage® is a nursing intervention based on intentional, mindful touch and an empathetic caring relationship. A certified nurse will perform the intervention on predefined body areas, including the face, back, shoulders, arms, hands, legs, and feet, according to a standardized protocol. Oil or moisturizing cream will be used to facilitate the massage. Sessions will take place in a dedicated setting that ensures privacy and comfort, after the participant's work shift. Participants will receive eight sessions over one month, twice weekly, lasting up to 30 minutes each, with at least 48 hours between sessions.
Serenity Room
The Serenity room intervention provides controlled multisensory stimulation inspired by Snoezelen principles. The environment includes soft lighting with gradual color changes, ceiling-mounted fiber optics, background music, reduced external noise, and ergonomic seating. Each 30-minute session includes 10 minutes of acclimatization, 10 minutes of seated relaxation, and 10 minutes of gradual reorientation. Trained Psychiatric Rehabilitation Technicians will supervise the sessions and adjust light and sound intensity to individual preferences. Participants will attend eight sessions over one month, twice weekly, after their work shift, with at least 48 hours between sessions.
Combined Serenity Room and Caring Massage
The Combined Caring and Multisensory intervention alternates Caring Massage® with Serenity room sessions. Caring Massage® involves intentional, mindful touch delivered by a certified nurse according to a standardized protocol. Serenity room sessions provide controlled multisensory stimulation through soft lighting, background music, and comfortable seating, supervised by trained Psychiatric Rehabilitation Technicians. Participants will attend two sessions per week after their work shift for one month, for a total of eight sessions: four Caring Massage® sessions and four Serenity room sessions. Each session will last up to 30 minutes, with at least 48 hours between sessions.
