VR During Chest Tube Removal After CABG

Sponsor: Maltepe University

View on ClinicalTrials.gov

Summary

The purpose of this randomized controlled clinical trial was to investigate whether virtual reality (VR) could reduce pain and anxiety during chest tube removal in adult patients who underwent coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The main questions this study aimed to answer were: * Does the use of virtual reality reduce pain during chest tube removal? * Does the use of virtual reality reduce anxiety and improve physiological responses during chest tube removal? Researchers compared patients who received virtual reality in addition to routine care with patients who received routine care alone. A total of 82 patients participated in the study. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups, with 41 patients in each group. Participants in the virtual reality group: * Wore a VR headset and watched nature videos with accompanying sounds, starting five minutes before chest tube removal and continuing throughout the procedure. * Received routine care during chest tube removal. Participants in the control group: \- Received routine care during chest tube removal without virtual reality. Pain, anxiety, and physiological parameters were assessed before and after chest tube removal to evaluate the effects of the intervention.

DEVICE

VR Shinecon G04EA Virtual Reality Headset

Participants in the experimental group receive a virtual reality intervention using the VR Shinecon G04EA virtual reality headset, which displays immersive nature videos accompanied by audio. The intervention begins 5 minutes before chest tube removal and continues throughout the procedure. The virtual reality headset is used as a non-pharmacological distraction method to reduce pain and anxiety associated with chest tube removal. The intervention is administered in addition to routine postoperative care in the cardiovascular intensive care unit following coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
