Comparison of Task Trainer and Virtual Reality Approaches in Dysrhythmia Management Education
Sponsor: Karadeniz Technical University
Summary
The aim of this randomized controlled simulation-based educational study was to compare the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR)-based and task trainer-based training in improving dysrhythmia management performance among intern physicians. The study addressed two main research questions: 1. Is VR-based training as effective as task trainer-based training in improving dysrhythmia management performance? 2. Are improvements in dysrhythmia management performance maintained four weeks after training? A total of 30 intern physicians participated in the study, with 15 participants assigned to each group. Participants underwent the following procedures: * A baseline performance assessment using a high-fidelity patient simulator involving bradydysrhythmia, supraventricular tachycardia, and ventricular tachycardia scenarios. * Practical dysrhythmia management training using either an immersive VR environment or a conventional task trainer. * An immediate post-training performance assessment using high-fidelity simulation scenarios. * A retention assessment four weeks after training to evaluate the maintenance of acquired skills. Participant performance was evaluated using standardized, weighted checklists based on dysrhythmia management algorithms. Performance scores ranged from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating better performance. All assessments were video-recorded for subsequent evaluation. Changes in performance scores were compared between the two groups to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational interventions and the retention of acquired skills.

Virtual Reality-Based Dysrhythmia Management Training
Participants assigned to the virtual reality group received practical dysrhythmia management training in an immersive virtual reality environment. The training involved simulated clinical scenarios of bradydysrhythmia, supraventricular tachycardia, and ventricular tachycardia. Participants practiced patient assessment, rhythm recognition, clinical decision-making, and appropriate management interventions in a virtual clinical setting.
Task Trainer-Based Dysrhythmia Management Training
Participants assigned to the task trainer group received practical dysrhythmia management training using conventional task trainers. The training addressed bradydysrhythmia, supraventricular tachycardia, and ventricular tachycardia through hands-on simulation exercises. Participants practiced patient assessment, rhythm recognition, clinical decision-making, and appropriate management interventions using physical training equipment.
