Village Doctor-Delivered Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults in Rural Chongqing
Sponsor: Chongqing Center for Disease Control and Prevention
Summary
Falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults in rural China. This study evaluated whether a village doctor-delivered fall prevention program, integrated into the national Basic Public Health Services, could reduce falls among community-dwelling older adults aged 60-79 years at high risk of falling in rural Chongqing. In this cluster randomized controlled trial, 8 villages were randomly assigned to either a multicomponent fall prevention intervention (health education, home-based balance and strength exercises, and home environment modification guidance, delivered by village doctors through classroom sessions and home visits) or usual care with printed fall prevention materials. A total of 320 participants were followed for 12 months. Falls, fall-related injuries, and fall prevention knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) were assessed.
