Single-Session Bedside Presence-Adaptive Music Therapy in Perioperative Inpatients: An Exploratory Case Study
Sponsor: Huayin Xu
Summary
This exploratory case study aims to assess the feasibility and immediate responses associated with a single-session bedside Presence-Adaptive Music Therapy (PAMT) protocol in perioperative inpatients. The study plans to enroll 12 adult patients undergoing elective surgery at Xiamen Humanity Hospital, China. Each participant will receive one approximately 15-minute bedside PAMT session delivered by a qualified music therapist during the preoperative or postoperative hospitalization period. The PAMT protocol consists of five stages: Check In, Musical Mirroring, Awareness Facilitation, Adaptive Modulation, and Sedation \& Stabilization. The music therapist adapts the musical interaction to the patient's current emotional state and responses. The study uses a single-group, pre-post exploratory case study design without randomization or a control group. Participants' overall emotional states will be assessed before and after the session using a 0-10 visual analog scale (VAS). Patient satisfaction, verbal feedback, nonverbal responses, and therapist observations will also be documented. The findings are intended to provide preliminary evidence regarding the feasibility and clinical application of bedside PAMT and to inform future research.

Presence-Adaptive Music Therapy (PAMT)
Participants receive one approximately 15-minute bedside Presence-Adaptive Music Therapy (PAMT) session delivered by a qualified music therapist. The protocol includes five stages: (1) Check In, (2) Musical Mirroring, (3) Awareness Facilitation, (4) Adaptive Modulation, and (5) Sedation \& Stabilization. During the session, the therapist uses musical improvisation and adapts rhythm, mode, and melodic contour according to the patient's emotional state and feedback. The intervention is delivered during preoperative or postoperative hospitalization.
