Periodontal Health Among Cigarette, Electronic Cigarettes, and Narghile Smokers

This study compares the different effects of traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and narghile on periodontal health among a sample of Al-Hawash Private University students. The main question it aims to answer is: Are there statistically significant differences in periodontal parameters among different types of smokers?

Acute Exercise Intensity Responses in Women Who Smoke

Cigarette smoking is associated with adverse cardiovascular, respiratory, and cognitive effects. Acute aerobic exercise may influence cardiovascular workload, respiratory function, and cognitive performance; however, evidence comparing the immediate effects of different exercise intensities in people who smoke remains limited. This randomized controlled trial investigated the immediate effects of a single high-intensity versus low-intensity treadmill exercise session on rate-pressure product, spirometric outcomes, and cognitive performance in female healthcare professionals working in special education settings who smoke. The study provides information on the immediate cardiovascular, respiratory, and cognitive responses to different intensities of treadmill exercise in this population.

This a Clinical Trial to Evaluate the Efficacy of I-PRF, Povidone-Iodine and Laser as Adjuncts to Non-surgical Periodontal Treatment in Smokers and Non-Smokers Periodontitis Patients

This study is a randomized, controlled, split-mouth clinical trial designed to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of four different subgingival adjuncts used along side standard Scaling and Root Planning (SRP). This protocol is designed to be a standardized therapeutic model. The subgingival adjuncts are standardized, ensuring that the results are not operator dependent and can be replicated across any dental unit. The primary goal of this study is to evaluate the clinical efficacy of three distinct adjunctive strategies: Biological (I-PRF), Antiseptic : Povidone- iodine , Diode-Laser activation, compared to a Saline Control in the initial treatment of stage 2, 3 and stage 4 of the 2018 AAP/EFP periodontal classification.

CAT Score and Airway Limitation in Adult Smokers

This study aimed to show the relationship between CAT Score and airway limitation in smokers who applied to MSKU Chest Diseases Polyclinic with respiratory complaints (shortness of breath, cough, sputum, etc.) and underwent respiratory function tests. CAT Score is a measurement used to evaluate the quality of life of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients. CAT Score is a scale used to assess patients' symptoms (such as shortness of breath, cough, and sputum) and problems affecting their daily activities. CAT Score usually takes a value between 0 and 40, and a high score may indicate that the patient's quality of life is low. There are studies on the usability of CAT Score in Bronchiectasis, Tuberculosis, and Asthma Diseases other than COPD. We hypothesize that there is a positive correlation between CAT Score and airway limitation in smokers before COPD develops. The study was planned as cross-sectional. Between July 2024 and December 2024, patients who apply to MSKU Chest Diseases Polyclinic with respiratory complaints and have a history of smoking will have their CAT scores, 6-minute walking test, and height and weight measurements performed and recorded. In our study, the comparison of CAT Scores of individuals who smoke and have normal respiratory function test parameters with those who are not normal but excluded from COPD is planned as the primary endpoint, and comparisons of CAT Scores with exercise capacities and body mass indexes are planned as the secondary endpoint.

Immediate Effects of Mental Practice and Therapeutic Exercise in Mild Smokers

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn about the effects who would add mental practice based on action observation to a therapeutic exercise program in young mild smokers. The main question it aims to answer is whether the observation of actions prior to the implementation of a therapeutic exercise session improves the response to it on respiratory, strength and muscle function variables. Participants will be assigned to one of 2 study groups: G1) Therapeutic exercise plus action observation training (n=20) G2) Therapeutic exercise plus sham action observation training (n=20)

Smoker Extracellular Vesicles Influence on Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells

Cigarette smoking is a habit that has spread all over the world and is a significant risk factor for many diseases including cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD),asthma and lung cancer. Evaluation and understanding of tobacco health effects are of major interest worldwide and answer to important societal concerns. Identification of new biomarkers of exposure to tobacco smoke potentially implicated in COPD or lung carcinogenesis would allow a better observation of tobacco exposed population, thanks to screening establishment at reversible stages of pathological processes. In this study, the main goal is to study whether cigarettes smoking alters miRNA profiles of extracellular vesicles (EVs) present in human broncho alveolar lavages (BALs), which could affect surrounding normal bronchial epithelial cells status.

Evaluation Of The Efficacy Of Subgingival Application Of Lovastatin Gel As An Adjunct To Non-Surgical Treatment Of Periodontitis In Generally Healthy Smokers And Non-Smokers Patients in Central Europe.

The aim of the study is to evaluate how a gel (1.2% lovastatin) applied under the gum improves the results of classic periodontal treatment (SRP-scaling, root planing). The study involves two groups of adults diagnosed with periodontitis: the first group consists of generally healthy individuals who do not smoke tobacco. The second group consists of generally healthy individuals who have been smoking for at least 5 years. Before the study begins, each participant will undergo gum health measurements. Changes in these parameters will be monitored throughout the study. Two teeth will be selected for each participant: * a gel containing the medication will be applied under the gum of one tooth * a gel that looks similar to the medication but does not contain any medicinal substance will be applied under the gum of the second tooth. Before applying the gel, each participant will undergo subgingival cleaning (SRP) to remove any debris that may prevent the medicine from working. The study will last six months. Expected results: * all participants will experience an improvement in the condition of their gums after treatment * the effect of treatment will be better in non-smokers than in smokers * the treatment outcome will be better in the area where the medicated gel was applied compared to areas where the gel without medicinal substances was applied.

Incident Chronic Obstructive pulmoNary dIsease Cohort Study (ICONIC)

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), , secondary to smoking, is a major public health issue with very high direct and indirect costs. The impact on the health system of undiagnosed patients, up to 70% of patients, is increasingly documented. However, systematic spirometry screening remains controversial among smokers in the absence of data to link the detection of new patients with improved management and clinical events and health goals. More generally, there is little data on the evolution of patients in real life once they have entered the care system. The premise is that with systematic screening in general medicine, it is possible to identify the evolution of newly diagnosed COPD patients, to distinguish the different possible evolutions according to the initial phenotype and the management.
