Prevalence and Impact of Micronutrient (Iron-Folic Acid) Deficiencies on the Health of Adolescent Girls in Coastal Areas of Bangladesh

Anemia and iron-folic acid (IFA) deficiencies are major nutritional concerns among adolescent girls in environmentally vulnerable coastal communities of Bangladesh. However, evidence on anemia prevalence and health outcomes in relation to iron-folic acid (IFA) supplement receipt remains limited. Objectives: This study aimed to assess IFA deficiency-related health problems and the impact of IFA supplementation on hematological, nutritional, and overall health outcomes among adolescent girls in coastal Bangladesh Methods: A randomized controlled trial study was conducted among 440 adolescent girls from Patuakhali, Bagerhat, Noakhali, and Cox's Bazar districts of Bangladesh. In each district, 60 participants were assigned to the IFA intervention group and 60 to the control group. The intervention group received IFA for three months, with assessments of hemoglobin, anemia, nutritional status, and health outcomes.

Ferric Derisomaltose and Outcomes in the Recovery of Gynecologic Oncology: ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery)

Iron deficiency has been reported in approximately 35% of patients with a gynecologic malignancy. Blood transfusions are known to be immunosuppressive and carry immediate and long-term risks. Pre-operative blood transfusion in gynecologic oncology patients is associated with higher rates of surgical site infection, length of stay, composite morbidity, cancer recurrence, and mortality. Pre-operative intravenous iron formulations have been shown in benign gynecology and other surgical specialities to increase pre-operative hemoglobin and decrease post-operative transfusion rates. This is a randomized double-blinded clinical trial evaluating the effects of treating patients undergoing gynecologic oncology surgery with intravenous ferric derisomaltose to correct pre-operative iron-deficiency anemia. The study aims to assess the effectiveness of preoperative ferric derisomaltose/iron isomaltoside compared to placebo in correcting preoperative hemoglobin in patients undergoing surgery for gynecologic malignancy.

Impact of Telepharmacy on Hemodialysis Outcomes

This study looked at whether regular follow-up by pharmacists through phone calls (telepharmacy) can help improve the treatment of anaemia in patients undergoing haemodialysis. Anaemia is very common in patients with kidney disease and can cause fatigue, weakness, and an increased risk of heart problems. It is usually treated with medications such as erythropoietin (EPO), but managing the correct dose and ensuring patients follow treatment can be challenging. In this study, patients were divided into two groups. One group received standard care, while the other group received additional support from pharmacists through regular phone calls. During these calls, pharmacists helped patients understand their medications, encouraged adherence, monitored symptoms, and worked with doctors to adjust treatment when needed.

POASAC Study (Preoperative Anemia Severity and Classification Study)

The goal of this observational study focuses on the effect of different preoperative anemia status on perioperative complications in patients under moderate- to high-risk surgery. Different anemia types conclude iron-deficiency anemia(IDA), anemia of chronic disease/anemia of inflammation(ACD/AI), and combined anemia. The main question it aims to answer is whether there is a difference in the incidence of complication related to oxygen supply and demand imbalance in patients with IDA, ACD/AI or combined anemia. Patients without preoperative anemia will be recruited as the control group for secondary outcome analysis, which is whether there is a difference in the incidence of complication related to oxygen supply and demand imbalance in patients with or without anemia.

Effectiveness Study During the First 1,000 Days in Kenya

Malnutrition is a public health problem in Kenya, with 26% of children underfive years of age stunted, and 26% of pre-school children, 26% of women of reproductive age and 42% of pregnant women being anaemic, respectively. Agriculture is the main source of income, food and nutrients for the majority of rural families in Sub-Saharan Africa including Kenya. Most farmers are smallholders and are vulnerable to poor nutrition. Thus far, programmes have mostly focused on increasing yields and household income, but not on improving nutritional status. One Acre Fund (1AF) has over the past 10 years successfully introduced an agriculture programme to smallholder farmers in Western Kenya focusing on improving harvest. 1AF is therefore well placed to transform an existing and successful agriculture programme into the world's largest 'nutrition network' for farmers, and it is the hope that a partnership between Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and 1AF will create a strong voice for nutrition within the agriculture sector. The project aims to use an integrated programme by introducing nutrition-sensitive (improved water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH): e.g. soap for hand washing) and nutritionspecific (e.g. micronutrient supplements) components to 1AF's agricultural programme. The impact of such an integrated programme will be assessed in a cluster randomized intervention study in pregnant women and - after delivery - their offspring until they reach two years of age comparing one group receiving the integrated intervention to another group receiving the agricultural intervention (already in place).
